WHY VIDEO ASTRONOMY?

Video Astronomy is the easiest and most affordable method of astro-imaging available today. The cameras are most versatile, suitable for a range of uses such as solar, lunar and planetary imaging. And they also have onboard image integration capabilities and are so highly sensitive that they can be used to image deep sky subjects in real time. In addition, being video cameras, they also offer live viewing, without download/capture delays.

Modern CCTV technology is now developing quickly, and increasingly our video cameras provide a valid alternative to more expensive astronomical CCD cameras in terms of speed, ease-of-use and value-for-money. Our colour cameras use the new generation Sony Super HAD II imaging chip, not yet in use by competing astro cameras. And the latest generation DSP (Digital Signal Processor) gives the cameras improved sensitivity, and greater controllability of live picture functions such as Gain, hot pixel correction, gamma, etc.

VIDEO CAMERAS COMPARED WITH COOLED CCD ASTRO CAMERAS

Cooled CCD astro cameras are capable of longer exposures, and this is advantageous as far as imaging of deep sky objects is concerned. But video cameras have their own advantages, and there are disadvantages and problems associated with cooled CCD cameras which are not often acknowledged. These factors are set out below.

ADVANTAGES OF VIDEO CAMERAS

1. The shorter exposures of Video cameras places a low demand on the tracking accuracy of your mount. Any driven equatorial mount, and some alt-azimuth mounts, are suitable - field-rotation will not be an issue.

2. When attached to a small telescope, our video cameras will display on screen 4 magnitudes deeper than the eye alone at the telescope. A small 50mm aperture scope will display as deep as the eye alone at a 200mm scope. So our cameras (with your small scope, laptop and any photo tripod) would make a wonderfully portable (yet powerful) observation kit to take with you anywhere.

3. Maximum exposure is 20 seconds (5 secs Mintron), but free softare can stack images to increase sensitivity, etc.

4. More sensitive than most cooled CCD cameras at exposures up to 20 seconds - so is better at capturing video of moving objects such as meteors, ISS, and dare I say it, UFOs.

5. Live video - so focusing is simple in real time. With a cooled CCD camera, focusing can be a multi-step process.

6. Live video of all objects, including brighter deep sky objects. No waiting for images to download. A whole crowd can watch - no queuing at the eyepiece.

7. Short exposures down to 0.00001 secs are possible. For bright objects like the planets, a high frame rate is desirable to take advantage of those fleeting moments of atmospheric tranquility.

8. If you do eventually decide to purchase a cooled CCD camera, you will need a guider camera. Video cameras make excellent guiders, so the intitial purchase of a video camera always makes sense.

COOLED CCD CAMERAS - SOME DISADVANTAGES

1. Cooled CCD cameras can suffer from the effects of condensation, which can disrupt imaging sessions, and cause internal corrosion. This problem is often not directly addressed in User manuals. Only very expensive CCD cameras, such as the Apogee range, give a warranty against condensation.

2. The CCD sensors used in the more affordable cooled CCD cameras are not intended to be deep cooled. The sensor does therefore need to be protected from the thermal shock which can occur when the camera is switched off, and heats up rapidly from its cooled state. Cheaper Cooled cameras may not adequately address this problem.

3. Long exposures demand a good equatorial mount, and exceptional tracking accuracy. Telescopes such as the Meade LS-8, which cannot be equatorially mounted, are not suitable for exposures longer than a minute or so (due to field rotation). An expensive CCD long-exposure CCD camera would not be sensible. Video cameras, however, make excellent partners for such telescopes.

4. Cooled CCD cameras are for the purpose of downloading of long exposure images. Very demanding of your time - a single image can be wonderful, but might take a whole session to obtain. After initial enthusiasm wears off, will you still be prepared to invest the time and effort?

In contrast, video cameras are so quick and easy to use, and so portable, that they require no great investment of time or effort. And so versatile, that they will always have a place in serving your future astronomical interests, whatever they may be.
